I really like the winsock program that comes with chameleon sampler
disk. It is attached to several books (ie Windows Internet Tour Guide).
You'll probably want to replace the client programs. But the winsock
program is really good. I am able to make a wide variety of freeware
clients (mosaic, cello, Hgopher, pceudora, etc... work fine with it).

I have the same problem that my name server won't resolve address into IP numbers.
If you telnet to 130.59.1.40 and login as "lookup" it will give IP numbers for Domain Names.
You can then add these to your host file. Then it is just a click with your mouse.

Winvn and Trumpet Newsreader are two options superior to Winqvt for news.
You should follow the alt.winsock newsgroup for information about
winsock-compliant applications. There you will find a FAQ for winsock
applications which will tell you where to find these two programs.

You are probably using the best Winsock NNTP news reader out there right now.
Trumpet beats all of the commercial newsreaders, according to PC Week (Network
edition) a few weeks ago when they looked at Windows TCP/IP programs.

Make sure you are running it on a 486 with 8 MB of RAM and a good nice swap
file ... There's also seems to be problem with Mosaic not returning resources
back to Windows after it exits.

The problem is actually quite easily solved for WinMosaic. You need to
run a 'proxy' server on the firewall. you can have your unix
administrator do this for you. (Easy for me to say - I'm a unix
administrator myself. :-) You then tell mosaic where the proxy
server is by adding the lines:
[proxy information]
ftp_proxy=http://proxy.host.domain:80/
http_proxy=http://proxy.host.domain:80/
wais_proxy=http://proxy.host.domain:80/
gopher_proxy=http://proxy.host.domain:80/
to mosaic.ini. 80 is the default port number for http. I do this
myself, and it generally works quite well.
You will find that using lynx to check out the various pages that
describe this info very useful while doing the configuration. lynx is
a text-only WWW browser that you can run from a unix terminal window.
I also recommend that you aim your slip/IP/mosaic related questions to

Subject: Mosaic question
I have a question about mosaic. I am not sure how to connect to
random ftp sites. Let's say I do an archie seach for ftp sites that have
a given file, then I want to access these sites. Mosaic allows a
great interface for accessing ftp sites, but from what I have seen it
only applies to sites that are within an HTML interface file. Is
there a way
that I can connect to a particular ftp site at will, ie., I have the address
and want to use the mosaic interface to view and download files.
Hope someone has an idea, Thanks, Mike

It runs just fine on my machine. Of course I have 16 Megs of RAM and a
40 Meg permanent swap file. I would suggest using a large permanent
swap file.

Hint: if you find a good site, don't tell anyone. :)
